Eagle Telemedicine Physicians use the InTouch RP-7 (robot) to facilitate patient exams. To use the RP-7 requires a simple installation at both the hospital site and the physician site. At the physician site a control station is installed. This is a computer workstation equipped with a video camera, microphone, joystick and specialized software. This computer is linked to the Internet via a broadband connection. At the Hospital site, the RP-7 is installed on an 802.11 wireless network. Eagle Telemedicine Physicians examine patients via telemedicine just like they were physically in the room with the patient. Eagle physicians engage in real-time evaluations and can communicate in face to face conversations with patients and on-site medical staff. When a physical exam is necessary the on-site medical staff, typically nurses, assist with the exam under the direction of the Eagle physician.
In Eagle's experience patients do like seeing their doctor via telemedicine. It is certainly something new, but patients quickly appreciate the opportunity to receive care quickly and by a specialist that they may not otherwise have an opportunity to see.
The malpractice risk for telemedicine physicians is very low. Typically having a physician evaluation via telemedicine introduces less risk than in the delay or absence of the opportunity for patient evaluation.
Generally speaking commercial insurers will cover telemedicine services. Medicare and medicaid will cover telemedicine visits by physicians provided the patient visit takes place in a non-Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) as defined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). If the patient visit takes place in an MSA then reimbursement for these services is not allowed. Eagle strives to work with its partner hospitals and physician groups to create viable win-win business models given these obstacles.
In Eagle Telemedicine Physicians' experience medical staffs accept this form of service delivery. Eagle recommends gathering key stakeholders to address concerns and anticipate issues that may arise within individual organizations. Physicians and nursing staff alike enjoy being on the cutting edge of patient care.
Local physicians can and are encouraged to participate with Eagle Telemedicine Physicians. Eagle's collaborative and flexible models create synergies rather than competition. The goal is to work together to deliver care to patients in the community.
Eagle Telemedicine Physicians prefer to use the InTouch remote presence technology whenever and wherever possible. However, in locations where existing technology will allow, Eagle will work toward operational and clinical models that meet your facility's needs.
Eagle Telemedicine Physicians will use an electronic medical record (EMR) where available. When an EMR is not available other operational models are used to facilitate the smooth and secure transfer of health information.
